DIY Healing Paw Cream
If you’re a new dog owner, it may seem pretty odd to even think twice about your dog’s paws. I mean, they’re animals, right? God gave them sturdy and strong paws for a reason. They do not need shoes to protect themselves like we do because they’re DOGS.
This is what most people would say to me if I tried to educate them on paw safety.
Although dogs have resilient paw pads, they do need further protection. Especially when we humans force them into various situations like- running long distances on concrete, adventurous hikes in snow and so on. Fertilizers, salt/chemicals reactions with cold climates, or any excessive variation of harsh temperatures can cause dryness, cracking and additional pain on your pups paws. Trust me, this is a problem you want to prevent.
Long story short, it is extremely important to keep your pups’ paw pads healthy.
There are many ways to do this! One of the easiest ways being a nightly routine of rubbing coconut oil into your pup’s pads before bedtime. Coconut oil is extremely beneficial to your dog in an abundance of ways, but maintaining moisture and preventing cracks is at the top of my uses for Drake.
BUT- if you want to get super fancy, you can try create your very own paw cream for your pup.
All you need is:
2 tablespoons Sunflower oil
2 tablespoons Coconut oil
1 tablespoon Shea butter
In a pan, heat and melt the Coconut oil and Shea butter together over low heat.
Once the ingredients have melted and blended together, combine the sunflower oil and stir.
Pour the mixture into a small mason type jar (with a lid to improve the longevity of your cream) and allow time for mixture to cool and harden.
Apply to your dog's paws nightly. I choose to do this after Drake is inside for the night and I am about to go to sleep. This minimizes the amount of lint, hair, etc. that will get stuck to his paws.
As always, gradually introduce this to your pup to ensure there are no allergic reactions. If in doubt, contact your vet before applying.
