4 Tips for Raising Your New Rescue Dog

So, you have decided to give a dog-in-need a new, great home. Way to go!! You have no idea how much loyalty your new dog will have for you. There’s just one thing you need to keep in mind… Loyalty and comfort do not happen overnight.

Unfortunately, like humans, dogs that have suffered tragedies are harder to get in touch with and train. This can be a problem for many people. Issues that these dogs have can vary from food aggression to attacking people for no apparent reason.

Fortunately for you, below are four of the best tips and strategies for raising rescue dogs. This way, you and all the others that are welcome in your home can love and be loved by your new furry friend.

[1] Move Slowly

Doing a lot of things at a fast pace can make a dog nervous. Think about it; If somebody threw you into a new home with a new family and then the very next day they asked you to make breakfast and clean the house with no time to adjust, you would be freaked out! Right?? I know I would! The same goes for dogs. Take it slow and introduce training and exercise at a later time. This new pup needs time to calm down, realize he/she doesn’t need to be in fight-or-flight mode, and allow him or herself to feel love.

[2] No Chaos

If you live in a house of chaos, then rescuing a dog may be something you have to do later in life (hello, toddlers and babies!). Confusion and loud noises all the time stresses a dog out, especially a rescue dog. Plus, that dog is going to think that that chaos is the norm. When they adjust, and you want to be peaceful, they are going to think it’s time to run around and play. This will confuse them in all sorts of situations.

[3] Love Them Unconditionally

That is all a dog could ever ask for out of an owner. A dog's purpose in life is to be their owner's best friend, and they will fulfill that purpose no matter what, but you have to love them back. I am sure that this is one of the main reasons you rescued a dog. You knew there was a dog in need and you knew that you could love each other.

Be the one that your dog wants to be around, no matter what. There is this special bond between owner and dog that can't be broken, but you have to love them back. They will always be there for you; you just have to do the same. Cuddle them. Kiss them. Give them ear rubs. Feed them treats. Even bake some dog treats with them! It creates an even more special bond.

[4] Keep Working

Like anything, training a rescue dog takes work. You will have ups and downs. Please don’t quit! Your decision to rescue a dog that has never known what it is like to have an owner is one that should be admired. Like humans, dogs feel emotion, and you helped a living creature stop feeling sad and upset. YOU SAVED A DOG’S LIFE!!!

Adopting dogs is something that more people should do. It brings out real character when you adopt a dog. Not only are you sacrificing your time to retrain a dog that could have gone through traumas, but you are doing this while juggling whatever it is you have to juggle in day-to-day life.

You could be in the process of moving to Albany, repainting your fence, or doing lots of DIY’s while stuck at home, but you are also taking care and loving a creature that may have never felt love before in their life. That is something that most people in the world should look up to. It is the little things that inspire, like adopting a dog.

If you’re thinking about rescuing a dog, here are 5 reasons you should adopt, rather than shop. Don’t forget to pick up the necessities and grab a little something for you too! Being a rescue dog mom is something to be proud of.
