Bearwood Essentials - Farmhouse Decor for the Chic Dog Mom

Don’t you just hate those ugly plastic feeders that the big pet stores carry? Have you ever wondered if your dog’s water and food bowls were even at the optimal height? Gosh! And have you always wished for a customizable feeder that you can close when other dogs are over?! Yeah, we gals do too! If you answered yes to any of these questions, we have an answer to your problem! Bearwood Essentials, baby!

Bearwood Essentials may be a small business but they are totally a big deal! They specialize in custom elevated dog and cat feeders to match the chic interior of your home and give you the functionality you’ve been waiting for! As soon as I saw their Etsy shop and all they have to offer, I knew I needed one of Bearwood Essentials’ feeders in my home!

I just want to go through the pain points we asked at the beginning of this article.

OUT WITH THE UGLY PLASTIC FEEDERS!

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I was to throw away that black plastic feeder! (I even did an instagram story about it on Abbie and Gunner’s page.) For years, I tried to ignore that ugly thing... but really it was a total eyesore. It stuck out like a sore thumb in our home because it was just that ugly!

When I first purchased it a few years ago, I didn’t know that I had options. I naively thought that the cheap-looking plastic feeder was my only option for an elevated dog food and water stand. I want to keep pet parents from making the same mistake I did! You can have an elevated dog feeder that looks totally chic in your home! All thanks to Bearwood Essentials!

BUY THE RIGHT SIZE FEEDER FOR YOUR PUP!

Do you know how to tell if your dog’s food and water stand is the optimal height for their height? Did you even know that was a thing?! It’s not just about making your dog feel like royalty by not having to bend down to eat and drink, having the dog feeder at the proper height is truly better for their health!

Well, if you’re unsure on what height is best for your fur baby, here are some ways to help you shop the proper height on Bearwood Essentials’ Etsy shop!

[Option 1] Have your dog stand on all fours and measure (in inches) from just beneath the paws, on the floor, to the top of his/her shoulders. Subtract 6 inches from this number.

Example: Floor to Shoulders is 24”. Subtract 6”. Your dog’s feeder should be about 18” tall.

[Option 2] If you don’t have a tape measure to know the exact number or your dog just isn’t being cooperative, a good rule of thumb is that your dog should be able to eat and drink without lowering his/her neck or stretching it upward. The top of the food and water bowls should sit level with his/her lower chest.

An improved posture causes less stress on your dog’s back and joints. This is important for senior, arthritic, or dogs with other conditions that make swallowing difficult.

FOR DOG PARENTS WITH A MULTIPLE DOG HOUSEHOLD:

When selecting a dog feeder, it is better to choose an elevated dog feeder that is a little too short rather than a little too tall. If you have a Weimaraner and a Beagle, either purchase two separate feeders or choose the shorter feeder.

If one of your fur babies is not comfortable with the height of an elevated feeder, he/she will not only have a difficult time eating, but they will also not enjoy that special time and may choose to stop eating because of it. That is why it is key to choose the best height for each individual pup.

If you don’t want to chance it, here’s a more in-depth guide for breeds by size:

Small Dog Breeds

The proper dog feeder height for small dog breeds is between 2 and 6 inches tall, depending on the specific breed and individual dog.

Examples of small dog breeds: Dachshunds, Corgis, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Toy Poodles, Westies, etc.

Medium Dog Breeds

A comfortable dog feeder height for medium dog breeds is between 7 and 14 inches tall, depending on the specific breed and individual dog.

Examples of medium dog breeds: Beagles, Border Collies, Brittany Spaniels, Vizslas, Australian Shepherds, Whippet, etc.

Large Dog Breeds

The most suitable height of dog feeders for large dog breeds is between 15 and 20 inches tall, depending on the specific breed and individual dog.

Examples of large dog breeds: Dalmations, Chows, Boxers, Golden Retrievers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Airedale Terriers, etc.

Extra Large Dog Breeds

A fitting height of dog feeder for extra large breeds will be between 21 and 27 inches tall, depending on the specific breed and individual dog.

Examples of extra large dog breeds: Afghan Hounds, Bloodhounds, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Saint Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds, etc.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DOG’S FOOD AND WATER STAND!

The greatest thing to ever happen to pet parents is having the ability to customize everything for their individual pup! With Bearwood Essentials, you can have your dog’s name put on their feeder, have three bowls instead of two bowls, have a top to cover the bowls when company is over, and the list goes on!

Two reasons that Bearwood Essentials’ Farmhouse style dog feeder with the hinged top is one of my absolute favorite things, is this…

[Scenario 1] One of my main concerns, as a mom, is that my crawling baby likes splashing around in the dogs’ water and stuffing as many pieces of their food into his mouth as possible! Eli (10 months old) absolutely loves getting into Abbie and Gunner’s water and splashing around, creating a wet mess on our tile floor. With Liam (2 years old) being the crazy toddler that he is, he runs around the house causing mayhem a lot. And the water that was just spilled on the floor quickly becomes a hazard. The hinged lid makes it super easy to avoid unnecessary boo boo’s from happening. I also want to point out that if you have friends or family members with small kids, this is a great thing to have so that they don’t get into your dog’s food and end up choking! This hinged lid is seriously a life saver!!

[Scenario 2] If scenario one doesn’t resound with you because you don’t have kids/don’t plan to have kids, I’ve got you covered! Say your bestie just adopted the world’s sweetest and cutest pup! Like, she’s perfect in all sense of the word. And one day they come over to hang and binge-watch Grey’s but then it’s suddenly interrupted by a dog fight because nobody knew this sweet pup would be food aggressive over your dog’s food! BOOM! Once again, this hinged lid is a friggin life saver.

Sorry to be such a Debbie downer, y’all! But these are things that I, Mrs. Worry Wart, think about! I just want you to be able to avoid anything negative that may happen around your dog’s food and water stand.

MORE CUSTOMIZABLE OPTIONS

Bearwood Essentials not only lets you choose the style, stain, and height of your dog’s new food and water stand, but they also let you decide if you want your pup’s name on it as well! You can get the letters put directly on the stand like the first photo you see or you can get their name on a hanging sign like you see in the second photo! And if you’re creative, you can get something on their stand that isn’t their name. Maybe their Instagram handle? #InstagramFamous.

If you are inspired by what you see on Bearwood Essentials Etsy shop but want to add a little something extra, they can create custom orders tailored to your wants and needs! Dog feeders start at only $89.99!
